Freedom 21, Easton 10 – Rapid Recap
Freedom High School’s football team let it be known emphatically on Saturday night that the Patriots will have a say regarding the fate of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Northampton Division.
The Patriots, ranked third by lehighvalleylive.com, scored 21 unanswered points and knocked off No. 2 Easton 21-10 at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
Turning point: Trailing 10-0, Freedom got some crucial momentum going into halftime when quarterback Brian Taylor tossed a high pass that was snagged by Owen Johnson-McCormick for a 23-yard touchdown. The extra point cut Easton’s advantage to 10-7 with 20 seconds remaining before intermission.
The Patriots received the opening kickoff of the second half and scored four plays later. Taylor hit AJ Fletcher on a double move for a 48-yard TD, pushing Freedom ahead 14-10 with 10:30 to go in the third quarter.
Freedom used 14 plays to go 75 yards on its next possession, which was capped off by a diving, 14-yard touchdown reception by Fletcher to make the score 21-10 with 1:32 remaining in the third.
Top performers: Fletcher, who also starts at cornerback, had four catches for 81 yards and two scores. Tailback Matty Russin, another one of Freedom’s corners on defense, took 22 carries for 94 yards.
Taylor had a rocky start but completed 7 of 17 passes for 135 yards and three TDs.
Easton running back Nahjee Adams ran 23 times for 126 yards and the Red Rovers' lone score.
What it means: Freedom moved to 2-0 and set up a blockbuster matchup with Nazareth (3-0 overall, 2-0 division), the defending District 11 Class 6A champion, next week.
Easton falls to 1-1 ahead of a matchup with Bethlehem Catholic (2-1, 1-1).
