BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis program added two players, Betina Tokac of Istanbul, Turkey, and Caroline Pozo from St. Louis, Mo., head coach Danielle Steinberg announced Thursday.

Tokac is an 18-year old player from Okyanus College in Istanbul, Turkey. She comes from a big tennis family where her father is a tennis coach and her brother is a professional and national Olympic tennis player. Tokac was an ISF Champion at the ISF World Championships in Italy in 2019.

Tokac also has national team experience, playing at 12, 14 and 16. Her biggest moment in her career thus far was playing at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2018.

She plans to major in English at CU and hopese to play on the WTA Tour after college.

"We are very excited to welcome Betina to our family," said Steinberg. "She is a very talented player, who comes from a family of exceptional athletes. Her junior resume is very strong, and I am confident she will have a positive impact on the team right away. Moreover, Betina is a great person and is exactly what we look for in our student athletes."

Pozo competed at Northwestern for three years before transferring to Colorado. The daughter of two collegiate tennis players, Pozo dominated the Missouri Class 2 in high school where she had an overall singles/doubles record of 158-9. As a freshman, Pozo was the state runner-up in singles, which turned out to be her last singles match where she would drop a set, let alone lose the match. She went on to post a 77-0 record as a sophomore, junior and senior with three state titles for a singles career record of 101-2.

At Northwestern, Pozo played in eight matches as a freshman, finishing with a 4-4 record in singles and a 6-1 doubles record. As a sophomore she had a 16-10 singles record, playing mostly in the No.4 singles matches. She was also 8-5 in doubles matches. Her junior season was cut short, but not before she went 5-6 in singles in the fall and 4-5 in doubles, bringing her collegiate career totals to 25-20 in singles and 18-11 in doubles play.

"I've known Caroline since her days as a junior in the Missouri Valley section," said Steinberg. "I've followed her successful career at Northwestern, and I was thrilled when she showed interest in Colorado. Caroline is a fierce competitor and will be an excellent role model to the younger players. At NU she played under one of the best coaches in the country (Claire Pollard) so she is joining us with a wealth of knowledge and experience."
Colorado had its 2020 season cut short due to the COVID pandemic but hopes to compete this spring. No official schedule announcements have been made by the Pac-12 or CU.
