We are fresh off our search for Michigan’s Best Doughnut, and it is the perfect time to celebrate these sweet treats everywhere. Lucky us, its National Doughnut Day on November 5th, so we’ve got dozens and dozens of ways you can salute this essential holiday.
Did you know that there are actually two national doughnut days? We didn’t realize this either, but it makes sense that our love for doughnuts is so great that it just can’t be contained in one day.
The original doughnut day is celebrated in June, on the first Friday of the month. According to the website Foodimentary, the holiday has its origins in World War I, and was originally celebrated in 1938. The Salvation Army in Chicago held the celebration as a fundraiser for those hurting from the Great Depression, and to honor the women who had served during the war, who were known as the Salvation Army Lassies. And there’s a very good reason why they picked doughnuts as the way to honor these brave women.

During World War I, people who wanted to support the war effort were often put in charge of food production for the troops. The Salvation Army sent over 250 women to the front in France to serve meals. The women quickly realized that the army helmets were the perfect size for frying doughnuts, which they did, seven at a time.
National Doughnut Day in June was a way for the Salvation Army to not just recognize these women, but also as an annual fundraiser.
Fast forward to November’s celebration, and things get murky. Most likely this second date resulted from a retailer looking to increase sales, and it falls close enough to Veteran’s Day (November 11) that the tie in made sense. While the June date has a pretty interesting historical tie-in, and is the more ‘official’ celebration, we see no reason not to honor both dates, because why not? It’s doughnuts, and they’re always good, especially if they are some of Michigan’s Best.
