NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley announced the signing of 16 members of his fourth recruiting class Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's early signing period.
Of the 16 signees, two are ranked as five-star prospects on a five-star scale by recruiting sites 247Sports, ESPN or Rivals, while 13 have earned four-star designation from at least one of those outlets. The early signing period lasts through Friday, while the regular signing period runs from Feb. 3 through April 1.
"Super excited about this class so far and am really proud of how everyone just sort of pulled together during such unusual circumstances," said Riley, whose Sooners will face Iowa State on Saturday looking their sixth straight Big 12 title. "We have great appreciation for all of the guys in this class and their families. And because of the inability to get out and evaluate guys as part of our normal process this year, we really were very selective in making sure we were targeting the right kind of players and right kind of people. We couldn't be more happy with the players and the families that are now a part of our program. Just a great, great group."
Fifteen of the 16 signees are high schoolers and the other attends junior college. Wednesday's signees hail from seven states as well as Washington, D.C. Nine of the signees are defensive players, six are offensive players and one — Billy Bowman — is labeled an "athlete" who Riley said could play on either side of the ball at OU, or both.
The Sooners reeled in the consensus No. 1 quarterback prospect in the country in Washington, D.C.'s Caleb Williams, as well as ESPN's top receiver in Tampa's Mario Williams. Both are considered five-star recruits.
The state of Texas produced the most OU signees on Wednesday with six, while Oklahoma, Florida and Virginia each produced two. The Sooners also signed one player each from Illinois, Maryland, Oregon and the nation's capital.
As of 3 p.m. CT Wednesday, OU's class ranked No. 7 nationally by 247Sports (fifth in average ranking per signee), No. 12 by Rivals (seventh) and No. 15 by ESPN.
Riley indicated OU will add more members to its 2021 class.
