Ryan Day is 'knocking on the door' of a championship - 247Sports

In each of the last two seasons, Ohio State has fallen just short of a national championship. In 2019, the Buckeyes lost a close game against Clemson in the semifinal, and they fell to Alabama in the national championship game on Monday night.

That may be frustrating for Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, but ESPN analyst David Pollack believes his time is coming. Nick Saban can’t be a head coach forever, and Day has already positioned himself to be among the next wave of all-time great coaches in college football. Competing in an era with Saban is a tough break for Day, but Pollack does think the Buckeyes coach will get the job done.

“The good thing is Nick’s almost 70,” Pollack said on ESPN’s CFB Live. “So he waits for Nick Saban to retire and then he’s going to get an opportunity to get a championship. There’s a lot of great coaches in college football right now that, whether it’s him or Lincoln Riley, or Kirby Smart, all these guys that have been knocking on the door. But they’ve got to go through the door with the best coach of all-time. You were born at the wrong time. You’re in the wrong era. It’s Nick Saban’s era. Dabo Swinney’s jumped up and gotten a couple, but everybody else has just been fighting when they can get one here or there.”

Another thing that Pollack suggested for Day in the offseason was making some changes on the defensive side of the ball. If Ohio State can take its defense to the next level, it will continue to be a strong national title contender.

“I think Ryan Day and them will be back,” Pollack said. “In 2017, Urban Meyer got his doors blown off of him, 31-0 by Clemson. What happened? He went out and got Ryan Day. Ryan Day can also go out and make changes as well to his staff, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens, on the defensive side of the ball, specifically.”

After the Buckeyes’ loss in the national championship, Day admitted that the outcome was disappointing. Still, he was proud of the way his team fought all season long.

“Tough night. Tough night,” Day said. “I'm proud of our team, proud of the seniors, proud of the year that we've had. But it was a tough night. A lot to unravel there, but when you look a team in the eye in the locker room after the long season we've been through, it's hard to start focusing on one or two plays or whatever it was because they've been through so much. I'm proud of the legacy that the seniors have left behind. But you've got to give credit to Alabama. Certainly a very good team, and they played really well tonight.”

In ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings for the 2021 season, the Buckeyes are all the way up at No. 5. Ohio State will certainly be in the mix again next fall.
