Community groups and volunteers throughout Montclair will come together the week of Earth Day to clean parks throughout the township.

The multi-site cleanup effort — under the coordination of township officials, the Montclair Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs Advisory Committee, the Northeast Earth Coalition, and park advocacy and service groups — will cap off a week of activities aimed at educating Montclair residents about being stewards of their local environment.

“Acting locally on Earth Day 2021 should be far more than a day of park cleanups,” Jose German, founder of the Northeast Earth Coalition, said in a statement shared by Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs Advisory Committee. “It must be a historic moment when citizens of Montclair rise up in a united call for the protection of our open public spaces. We must plant more trees, more pollinator gardens, reduce using plastic and reduce the unnecessary consumption of goods that are ending in our landfills.”

German is also a columnist for Montclair Local, writing the “Gardening for Life” series.

The cleanup on April 24 and 25 will include socially distance planting, pruning, branch and litter removal.

The Northeast Earth Coalition will kick off its week of Earth Day celebrations with a Zoom event on Saturday, April 17 at 10 a.m., featuring screenings of community environmental projects. On Sunday, April 18, at noon, will be a webinar, “Vegetable Gardening for Beginners.” Monday, April 19 through Thursday, April 22, at 10 a.m. each day, will be installments of the multi-part webinar “The Importance of Community Gardens.” Thursday, April 22, will be the webinar “Gardening from the Birds Perspective.”

Cleanups on Saturday, April 24 are: Canterbury Park at 9 a.m., Graz Park at  9 a.m, Nishuane Park at 9 a.m., Crane Park at 10 a.m. Edgemont Park at 10 a.m., Sunset Park at 10 a.m., Tuers Park at 10 a.m. and  Yantacaw Brook Park at 10 a.m.

Cleanups on Sunday, April 25: Essex Park at 10 a.m., Yantacaw Brook Park at 10 a.m., Porter Park at noon, Erie Park at 1 p.m., Rand/Skate Park at 1 p.m. and Watchung Park at 2 p.m.

“We look forward to bringing Montclair’s residents together to commemorate Earth Day by showing appreciation for the many green spaces we’ve relied upon especially heavily over this past year. The engagement of our volunteers during this past November’s Parks Appreciation Weekend was extremely encouraging, in particular the strong showing by the Montclair Public School student community.” – Alliah Agostini Livingstone, co-chair of the Montclair Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs Advisory Committee, said.

Councilman  Peter Yacobellis, the council’s liaison to the committee, said it was “so moving to see so many people want to literally roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and get to work to help make all of our parks even better than they already are.”
