BIG RAPIDS — In an effort to encourage education on government processes, Big Rapids Public Schools sixth grade students participated in Constitution day during which classes voted in a mock election to elect a new president of the United States.

Held on Friday, Sept. 17, the school event included a class discussion with Public Safety School Resource Officer Andre Torres who joined the students for a lesson on the electoral college.

Constitution Day, a nationwide public school initiative, was signed into law Dec. 8, 2004, by then President George W. Bush and is highlighted by many educators each year.

Officer Adam Torres said educating students on government processes is a vital part of early schooling.

"All education institutions receiving Federal funds must hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on Sept. 17, for the students served by the educational institution," Torres said.

Big Rapids sixth grade teacher Mark Brejcha said students enjoyed learning about the process and participating in the mock election.

“We divided the class in half and the candidates we chose to have them elect were Brutus the Bison or Clarissa the Camel,” Brejcha said. “We chose animals to be candidates because that helps us keep things neutral and avoid things getting inflammatory. We structured it to essentially mirror how the electoral college works so they learned a lot.”

"We always encourage and enjoy doing things like this to educate on the Constitution and how government works," he added. "It's important for them to learn because it will be a part of their lives. They had a blast and learned something which was the goal."
