Freedom 28, Emmaus 14 – Rapid Recap
Deante Crawford wanted the ball on Friday night and the Freedom High School defense kept giving it to him.
Crawford rushed for more than 180 yards and the Patriots forced five turnovers as third-seeded Freedom defeated fifth-seeded Emmaus 28-14 in the District 11 Class 6A championship on Friday night at Zephyr Stadium.
Turning point: Emmaus had first-and-10 at its 36-yard line, trailing 14-7 early in the fourth quarter. The Green Hornets tried a gadget play that result in a fumble, which Owen Johnson recovered for the Patriots.
Five plays later, Crawford sprinted up the gut for a 12-yard touchdown to push Freedom ahead 21-7 with 4:31 to play.
Sam Moratori took the ensuing kickoff into Patriots territory, but Freedom’s Connor Stofanak snagged an interception on the Hornets next play from scrimmage and returned it to the Emmaus 11.
Crawford punched in a 5-yard TD to stretch Freedom’s advantage to 28-7 with 3:07 left.
Top performers: Crawford, who played through a banged-up shoulder, took 26 carries for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
The Patriots defense was incredibly opportunistic and consistently shifted momentum to its side. Stofanak had a fumble recovery to go with his INT; Alexie Sangster and Lorenzo Feliciano also registered interceptions.
What it means: Freedom (11-2), which has won nine games in a row, claimed its second D-11 title in program history. The Patriots’ first crown, in 2018, also came at the expense of the Hornets.
Freedom will meet the Northeast/St. Joseph’s Prep winner in the state quarterfinals next week.
Emmaus ended its season at 9-4 and was denied its first district championship. The program has lost to Freedom in its only two title game appearances.
