CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - One of the foundational principles of our American democracy is the ability to follow your faith freely.
An Airforce Military member shows us this when his religious waiver finally got accepted.
Airman Darshan Shah, a medic at the FE. Warren Airbase recently got his religious accommodation approved.
Its been A two-year process
He is now authorized to wear a Tilak Chandlo, the religious marking of his Hindu faith, while in uniform.
“Along with this like, the uniform itself, now I get to .. you know both sides of my identity, I guess. A Hindu as well as an American military member,” said Sr. A. Darshan Shah, Airspace Medical Technician, FE. Warren.
From what he’s told his higher-ups, this freedom gives him the strength to be his best self.
“I think that the diversity of religion that we have in the military brings A strength to us. That diversity allows us to learn from others who might be different from us in an environment that accepts that...I think that overall is good to learn that not everybody is the same,” said Lt.Col. Kevin Chelf, Chaplin -FE.Warren.
According to Chaplin Chelf the military encourages members to strengthen the 4 pillars of what it means to be a healthy Airforce member.
These aspects include the social, physical, emotional, and spiritual,
”For an Airman to be fully fit to fight, there’s a spiritual part of that. For many, that’s religion,” said Chelf,
Chelf says this spiritual part is what helps strengthen members during turbulent times.
”Directing ourselves, but it kind of gives you a sense of purpose overall. Obviously, I have a job to do, but at the end of the day, in terms of how I do that and how my mentality is on how I do it. It’s all shaped by religion and what it’s meant to me,” said Shah.
And that freedom to follow your faith is an integral part of not only our country but also what the military supports.
“We’re lucky to live in country that takes everyone’s thoughts, and opinions into account,” said Shah.
Shah says his family and friends are very proud of him not only for his waiver but for his service to their country.
