BONIFAY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Newschannel 7 highlights an overcomer of addiction in the Freedom Friday segment, during the 5:30 p.m. newscast on CBS.

Most people want to hide the traumatic parts of their lives, but a Bonifay woman is using them as a tool to help others.

“I moved a lot as a child, um, I was abused,” said Destiny Melton.

Odds were stacked against the Houston, Texas native.

“I was never taught how to function in life,” she added.

What started with a little marijuana to kill the pain, grew into more.

“By the age of 15 I was using crack cocaine,” she said.

After moving to Holmes County, Destiny was introduced to meth.

“It just controlled my life,” she described.

It not only hurt her, but those around her.

“I had kids very young. I married very young. Sabotaged a marriage,” she explained.

Addiction stole her self-worth.

“I just didn’t thing God could save somebody like me,” Destiny said.

It gave her a feeling of hopelessness.

“If you think you’re too far gone, you’re actually indeed where God needs you,” she explained.

She says getting out of addiction might take you places you don’t want to go.

“I never thought I would say thank God for jail, but it saved my life,” she said.

It may force you to do things you don’t want to do.

“When you’re at the end of yourself is when Jesus can save you, when you’re ready to surrender your life and lay down your wants and pick up the things of God,” Destiny explained.

She says it’s worth it.

“I always dreamed of having a life like this,” she said tearfully.

Grace Fellowship Christian Church helped her with more than faith.

“God changed my life and used these people here to raise me up and teach me basic things in life that I was never taught,” she said.

Pastor Jerrod Jenkins is also an overcomer.

Destiny says if you’re struggling, reach out.

“It’s a beautiful thing, and it’s available to everybody,” she added.

She says your past doesn’t matter.

“Everything I’ve been through, it wasn’t for nothing,” she said.

Destiny now ministers to women in the same jail where she was once locked up.

She says you don’t have to have money to get recovery services.

“They’re free of charge so anyone can get help if they surrender to that program,” she explained.
