RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Tuesday is Religious Freedom Day here in the U.S. and with the war in Gaza now spanning over 150 days, we asked one group what religious freedom means to them.
Since the war in Gaza began on October 7 of last year there have been protests nationwide calling for a ceasefire. Along with the protests has come a rise in anti-semitism and members of the Synagogue of the Hills are hoping for more tolerance when it comes to religion.
“When a society targets a single people. It no longer becomes a community it becomes a very intolerant society. It seems that when the Jews are targeted other populations are not far behind,” said President of Synagogue of the Hills Steve Benn.
Benn says despite the recent uptick in anti-semitism nationwide that he and his community here in Rapid City have been privileged to not feel it so much. He also wants to remind those around the world and locally to be tolerant of all religions and not just your own.
“We’ve been privileged here in Rapid City having not felt the full brunt of the anti-semitic activities that we’ve seen throughout the country. That doesn’t mean that it hasn’t happened. We in the United States clearly have what few other places around the world can boast of and that is religious tolerance.”
Benn encourages those interested in connecting religions and helping their community to join the Rapid City Interfaith Council this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Faith Temple. The council plans to bridge the gap between religions while assisting those in need.
