HOLBROOK, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — As the nation remembered the 19th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and the 2,977 people killed that day, Suffolk County moved to make it an official day of mourning.
Suffolk County Legislator Anthony Piccirillo (R-Holbrook) of the 8th District sponsored legislation to recognize every Sept. 11 as “Patriots Remembrance Day” in Suffolk County. The Suffolk County Legislature passed the bill unanimously on Sept. 9.
Piccirillo said the naming of this somber day mirrors a federal bill passed in 2002, which called for Sept. 11 to be a national day of mourning and designated each Sept. 11 as Patriot Day.
“I felt that it was my duty to try and help to honor those we lost nearly two decades ago on that horrible day,” said Piccirillo.
The bill not only calls to honor and remember those who tragically lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, but those who have died from related illnesses, according to Piccirillo.
“Never Forgetting, means never forgetting; and now in Suffolk County it is guaranteed we will always remember,” Piccirillo said.
The bill received bipartisan support from the county legislature and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. Bellone issued a Certificate of Necessity to get the bill to the floor of the Legislature’s General Meeting on Sept. 9. Many of the legislators co-sponsored the bill, Piccirillo said.
Piccirillo’s 8th Legislative District is located almost entirely within the Town of Islip, with a small part located within Brookhaven Town. It includes Bayport, Blue-Point, Holbrook, Holtsville, Sayville, West Sayville, Oakdale, and parts of Ronkonkoma, Bohemia, and Medford.
