MADISON, Wis. — Dozens of new COVID-19 deaths were confirmed throughout Wisconsin on Friday, according to state and county health officials.

At least 3,726* have died of coronavirus complications since the start of the pandemic, with 62 new deaths confirmed Friday.

The state Department of Health Services said 202 more people have also been hospitalized. With 11,172 hospital beds across the state, 14% are available for new patients.

To date, a total of 136 patients have been admitted to the Alternate Care Facility at State Fair Park since it opened in October. DHS officials said there are nine current patients as of Friday morning.

Health officials recorded 4,396* new cases of the virus, a count which was above the seven-day average of 4,102. The state reached a lifetime total of 405,007* confirmed cases a day after surpassing the 400,000 mark. According to DHS, the number of active cases dropped to 63,202, or 15.6%.

The seven-day positivity rate for new tests by person has climbed to 32.7%, while the seven-day equivalent for total tests by day increased to 14.2%.

Earlier in the week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shortened the recommended length of quarantine from 14 days to 10 for those who come into close contact with a positive COVID-19 case.

DHS approved of the new guidelines Friday, which will go into effect in Wisconsin next week.

Although a 14-day quarantine remains the safest option, health officials say a person’s time in quarantine can end after 10 days without testing as long as no symptoms are reported.

That timeframe becomes seven days if the person’s COVID-19 test result comes back negative. However, daily symptom monitoring must continue until all 14 days have passed for either instance.
