Letter: Basking in the freedom to fail - Chico Enterprise-Record

In his letter on May 19, Terry Cleland writes that if you look around, you’ll see what it’s like to live in a socialist country. Mr. Cleland, I looked around. The White House, the Supreme Court, and 99.4% of Congress are not socialists.

Mr. Cleland goes on to describe one of the benefits of capitalism as the freedom to fail. Mr. Cleland must be ecstatic at this country’s commitment to this benefit.

We are failing to feed and house our entire population. We are failing to educate our children and young adults. We are failing to address the existential threat of climate change. And in contrast to his present complaint about our emergency response, we are failing to continue to take the precautions that were working in Butte County, leading to the sharp increase in infections we’ve already seen.

It arguably isn’t necessary to adopt socialist policies to address a global pandemic. Capitalist Taiwan has had a largely successful strategy as has socialist-run Vietnam. But so long as we’re governed by fools more concerned with “God-given rights” to haircuts then ensuring the safety of our community, we will continue to bask in the freedom to fail, over and over again.
