In nearly half of all states, residents are able to register to vote on Election Day. But in Texas, the deadline to register is an entire month before Election Day.
A Houston-area lawmaker hopes to change that.
State Rep. Ron Reynolds, a Democrat representing parts of Fort Bend County, filed a bill Thursday for the upcoming legislature that, if enacted, would allow anyone to register and vote on Election Day throughout the state starting in late 2021.
The bill states that two voter registrars must be present at each polling location to register new voters, according to text of the bill. Voters will cast a provisional ballot and fill out a voter registration form, which will then be corroborated by the registrar and Texas Secretary of State.
Evidence shows that same-day registration improves voter turnout, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The bill is the only of its kind in both houses.
The latest filing is one of several voting-related bills filed by Democrats, and Reynolds in particular. He previously filed bills for the 2021 session that would reinstate straight-ticket voting and implement online voter registration, according to Cayla Harris of the San Antonio Express-News.
