Bennington man found dead, after three day search - WCAX

BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - After a weekend-long search for 35 year-old Hans Heck, of Bennington, police say he was found dead Monday.

Bennington Police say, Friday evening, Crews responded to a rollover crash around 6:30 P.M. on Route 279, in the area of the Austin Hill overpass. Police say they found a Nissan pick-up truck with severe damage, but no driver inside.

Several witnesses on the scene, say the driver, Hans Heck, fled the scene on foot, heading south on Route 279 into the woods.

Investigators and K-9 units searched the area, Friday night and lost track due to a high fence and dangerous conditions. Officers remained on the scene for about two hours, searching surrounding areas and roads, but we’re still unable to find Heck.

Sunday, Bennington Police were contacted by friends and family of Heck, notifying them that nobody has had contact with Heck, since the night of the crash. Officers continued to search the area until after dark.

Police say, Monday, with assistance from friends and family, they began to search last known areas for Heck. K-9 units from Bennington Police, Winhall Police, Williamstown Police, Bennington County Sheriffs Department, and a Game Warden from Vermont Fish and Wildlife and Vermont State Police also assisted in the search.

Police say, a New York State Police Aviation Unit was called in to help with the search, Monday. The NYSP helicopter was able to locate and lead Officers, to an area of interest. Officers then found Hans Heck’s body in a wooded area off Route 279, about 200 yards from the road. Heck was pronounced dead at the scene.

Heck’s body is being transported to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.
