Hurley Leads Heptathlon, Walker Third in Decathlon Following Day One of CWU Multi - WOU Athletics

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Jenelle Hurley is off to a strong start holding the lead through the first four events of the heptathlon, while JJ Walker is right in the mix in the decathlon currently in third after the first day of the Central Washington Multi on Friday.

Hurley has 2,780 points to lead Seattle Pacific's Renick Meyer by 62 points. Amity Deters (2,197) sits eighth and Makenzie Smith (2,173) is in ninth.

Hurley opened the day coming in third in the 100-meter hurdles with a new personal-best time of 15.39. Continuing her strong showings in the high jump, Hurley took first reaching a height of 5-4.25, just off her season-best mark of 5-4.5. Then in the shot put, it was another top-three result when Hurley hit a distance of 30-9.5 to place third. In the 200-meters, Hurley closed the first day crossing in fifth with a time of 26.79, which set a new personal-best just clipping her previous best of 26.80 set last week at John Knight Twilight.

Deters opened the day placing 11th in the 100-meter hurdles, but came back strong finishing right behind Hurley in the high jump reaching a mark of 5-3 to place second. In the shot put, Deters placed 10th and then closed the day coming in sixth, again just behind Hurley, in the 200-meters with a time of 27.49. Deters set new season-high marks in the high jump, shot put and 200-meter.

Smith opened the day crossing in eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a new season-best time of 18.02. She just missed equaling her season-best in the high jump reaching a height of 5-0.5 to come in third, as WOU had the top-three finishers in the high jump. In the shot put, Smith hit a distance of 30-0.75 to come in sixth. Rounding out the first day, Smith competed in the 200-meters finishing in 11th.

In the men's decathlon, Walker is in third through the first five events with 3,185 points. Central Washington's Braydon Maier leads with 3,386, followed by teammate Ryan Thoma in second with 3,384 points. Deshaun Stevens is close to the top-three, currently in fifth with 2,991 points.

Walker opened the day coming in fourth in the 100-meters with a time of 11.92. He added to that a finish of fifth in the long jump hitting a mark of 20-4.25. Walker had another top-five finish in the shot put when his throw put him in fourth. Walker started to make up ground in the high jump winning the event reaching a height of 6-1.5. Walker closed the first day coming in fifth in the 400-meters with a time of 52.65, setting a new season-best in the event.

Stevens began the day coming in eighth in the 100-meters with a time of 12.36. Stevens made up ground right away in the next event when he came in third in the long jump reaching a distance of 21-1.25. Stevens then placed seventh in the shot put and was near his season-best mark in the high jump hitting a height of 5-7.75 to come in eighth. He rounded out the first day in the 400-meters when was pushing for the top spot before coming in second with a time of 51.19. He trimmed nearly two seconds off his previous season-high in the 400 from earlier at the WOU Multi.
