Liberty is the freedom to choose. To choose where you will live. To choose what religion you will practice. To choose no religion at all. To choose how you will earn the fruits of your labor, how you will raise your family, what values you will teach your children. Liberty is the freedom to choose a risky path through life or a safe one. It is the right to choose your vices or choose to avoid them. It is the right to make bad choices and good choices, dumb choices and smart ones. Liberty is the right to self-determination.
There is no small violation of liberty. There is no encroachment to it that is acceptable or justified. The loss of liberty is cumulative. If it is not jealously guarded, once lost it cannot be regained without considerable effort, and with each small liberty that is lost, it becomes an order of magnitude harder to regain. It is not a simple matter of one liberty taken from us and one liberty we have fought to regain. And the hardest rights to win back are ones which we ourselves have surrendered without contest.
Liberty is a choice. The choice we now face is whether we believe people have the right to choose, or whether we believe they must be told what their choices will be. I do not know what choice all of you will make, but I choose the dangers of liberty over the serenity of subjugation.
