Skillicorn: Let's choose freedom - Northwest Herald

I owe you an apology.

Just recently, I sent out a press release “Let the People Go!” where I stated, “Just what will it take to convince Pharaoh Pritzker to let people in most of Illinois go!”

I was wrong about that. It’s not about convincing Pritzker at all. It’s about convincing you, the People of Illinois, that our constitutional rights have been suspended long enough.

While I had my doubts from the beginning of this pandemic regarding the best way forward, we were told a month ago that we had to make sacrifices to save lives and “bend the curve” so that our hospitals weren’t overrun.

As a generous and compassionate people facing an unknown virus, mainly because the Communist Party of China is opaque and doing all it can to shift blame to what began in Wuhan, we peacefully decided to comply with the order to shut down our roaring economy and stay at home. I say that purposefully, since I am convinced there isn’t an elected official with an army on earth that could hold down the American people determined to do otherwise.

I thank God, that what was modelled, didn’t happen. Our hospitals weren’t overrun. No American that needed a ventilator was denied one. And day by day we are increasing testing, manufacturing medical supplies, developing therapeutics and reaching for a cure. But now JB commands us from on high that the entire state must continue to stay at home to save lives, that the numbers are increasing daily and the models predict a second wave will breakout.

I have news for you, all of that is inevitable. More testing is coming online each day so the numbers are going to keep rising. A second wave will occur once we start moving no matter when that is, along with an increase in the loss of precious lives.

Our government has had a month to prepare, to build out additional hospital capacity, acquire more protective equipment, and so on. Now is the time that we must weigh the risk where the virus has affected the least as we do in most of our daily lives when we drive a vehicle, take a flight, rub shoulders with others, work on dangerous jobs, etc.

This virus isn’t going away anytime soon, and while every life lost to this Wuhan virus is precious, the loss of life from the economic disaster that is upon us, climbing toward a million Illinoisans unemployed, is just as deadly. Domestic violence, drug abuse, overdoses, depression, immunity systems being weakened, and all the other woes that accompany an economic depression and a forced shut in order will only rise the longer we don’t take the risk and get back to our lives.

There are a couple of brave souls that understand our society can walk and chew gum at the same time. That we are a Nation of the rule of law, and that the courts are where we go to call into question a statute that they believe is overly broad and has violated their constitutional rights. I have seen some of the obscene comments directed at my colleagues, even though they are acting as individuals not elected officials. I am disgusted and grieved by the vitriol.

The closing statement from my press release still stands, “The people of Illinois are now aware of the invisible enemy we face. It is time to continue to protect the most vulnerable, ramp up testing, wear a mask [if necessary], and let people in most of Illinois get fully back to work and commerce. We are going to have to learn to live with this scourge for the foreseeable future and right now we are on a suicidal path of the governor's making.”

It is not up to Pritzker, Lightfoot, me or any other public official. It is up to you, the people, to decide what is best for you, your businesses, your families and your lives.

The course of action I am recommending is one of freedom and individual choices. The Governor is issuing mandates and forced compliance with these mandates. I want to give people a choice. Those businesses that don’t want to open up would not have to open and certainly no one would be compelled to patronize businesses that would decide to open.

Given a choice between forced compliance and freedom, the choice is clear – freedom.
