ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The emancipation celebration took place differently this year with a statewide virtual Juneteenth event featuring live performances of music, spoken word, dance and more online.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced festivities to livestream, which they did all day Saturday.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. It has been a New Mexico state holiday since 2006, according to the Governor’s Office.
