CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city of Cleveland saw its highest single-day increase in confirmed coronavirus cases Sunday with 75 new infections, Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration said.

That number breaks the record of 63 in a single day set just three days ago on June 25.

There were no new fatalities reported Sunday, according to a statement from the city. The latest positive tests bring the city’s total number to 2,245 cases and 75 deaths.

“Make no mistake - the virus has not gone away,” Jackson said in the Sunday statement. “If we don’t double down on prevention and take these measures seriously, the effects will be devastating.”

The city also said that two case had been transferred to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, according to the statement.

About 18% of those cases required hospitalization as of Saturday, according to the Cleveland Department of Public Health.

The gender breakdown, among cases where it was confirmed, is split 54% women and 44% men. Sixty percent of those infected are African American. About 16% are white. Asian residents comprise about 1% of the cases.

The new cases include males and females, whose ages range from their teens through their 70s, the release says.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health will work to identify any people who were in close contact with the newly confirmed patients to determine who now would require testing or monitoring for symptoms of COVID-19.

Coronavirus cases in Ohio rose to at least 50,309 with 2,807 deaths, according to statistics released Sunday by the Ohio Department of Health.

According to Johns Hopkins researchers, the U.S. has more than 2.5 million confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 125,000 deaths.
