California broke its record for new coronavirus cases Monday as health officials in Los Angeles County warned of “alarming” spikes in cases and hospitalizations.

California counties recorded 8,086 new cases as of late Monday with all but a few counties reporting daily totals, according to data compiled by The Chronicle. Some counties reported higher-than-normal tallies after not updating their case data over the weekend.

The state’s previous single-day high was 6,449 new cases reached last Tuesday, as California has seen its infection numbers shoot up in recent days due in part to easing of restrictions, social gatherings and outbreaks at a number of prisons, according to officials.

The nine Bay Area counties were reporting 618 new cases on Monday - including nearly 200 at San Quentin State Prison, where an outbreak has swelled to more than 1,000 active cases among inmates. California has reported 223,598 total cases and the Bay Area24,493.

In Los Angeles County, officials announced 2,903 new virus cases Monday, the county’s largest one-day increase to date — pushing its total past 100,000 cases. The county reported 1,710 hospitalized patients, an increase of several hundred from recent weeks.

“The alarming increases in cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations signals that we, as a community need to take immediate action to slow the spread of COVID-19,” county health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. “Otherwise, we are quickly moving toward overwhelming our healthcare system and seeing even more devastating illness and death.”

In Riverside County, which reported 991 new cases on Monday after not updating its number for two days, Rep. Raul Ruiz tweeted that intensive care beds were 99% occupied and hospitals had initiated surge capacity expansion plans.

Ruiz wrote in a statement he would call on county officials “to immediately reverse their decision to rescind public health safety measures” and “reinstate their order to wear masks in public.”

On Sunday, California counties reported 4,776 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospitals, the state’s 10th consecutive day marking a new high total and a 53.9% increase from two weeks earlier on June 14, according to state data reviewed by The Chronicle. The number of confirmed patients in intensive care was reported at 1,465, the state’s highest one-day total since the pandemic began.
