As we approach July 4, our celebration of independence and freedom, it's especially evident this year that freedom has a great deal to do with peace. People only experience true freedom, which is the ability to do good, when they are able to act to perform their good deeds. When there is no peace, but instead danger, lawlessness, and even violence, then true freedom cannot be attained.
Recently, the riots, looting and other criminal acts have done much to decrease the freedom of people in certain communities. Business owners and families do not feel safe. The intensity and coordination of the riots has made clear that a group of people want unrest and even revolution. They do not want peace. They are willing to trample the freedoms, lives, and property of others to gain power. This is not American.
What have we seen, on the contrary, that is very American and freedom-promoting? It is the honorable majority of police and law enforcement. President Trump said it well, “99% of them are great, great people,” and “Our police have been letting us live in peace.” President Trump gets it right while not denying that there are “bad actors.”
In contrast, the Minneapolis city council, which wants to radically and experimentally dismantle the police, get it wrong. Their position sends the wrong message to Americans, which is: “If you don't like authority, find an excuse to remove it.” Thoughts like this start revolutions.
What will happen to peace and freedom when there is no one to protect it?
