Michigan health officials reported 1,313 new coronavirus cases Friday, Sept. 11, marking the largest one-day increase since April 24.

It was the second daily total higher than 1,100 over the last five days, and marked a significant spike from the seven-day moving average of less than 800 new cases per day.

Friday’s afternoon update also included nine new COVID-19 deaths, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The state has reported more new deaths per day than the daily average (7) for three consecutive days.

Throughout the pandemic, Michigan has reported 110,832 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 6,578 known deaths associated with the novel virus.

Michigan is averaging 779 new cases per day, according to a seven-day moving average.

The state processed almost 36,000 diagnostic tests on Thursday. Of those, 4.25% were positive -- or about 1% higher than last week’s daily average. Thursday had the highest positive test rate for a day since Aug. 10 (4.3%)

Hospitalization reports have remained steady in recent weeks. As of Friday, the state had 568 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases across the state’s hospital systems, including nine children, with 79% of hospitals reporting.

There were 595 COVID-19-related emergency room visits reported on Thursday.

Last Saturday, the state health department reported that 80,7678 of the more than 100,000 residents diagnosed with COVID-19 had “recovered,” meaning they survived 30 days beyond the onset of their illness. The state will provide an updated recovery count on Saturday, Sept. 12.

COVID-19 PREVENTION TIPS:

In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.

Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.

Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued executive orders requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nosewhile in public indoor and crowded outdoor spaces. See an explanation of what that means here.
