Smoky conditions may get worse as the day progresses - KSNB

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Smoky conditions may end out being a bigger concern today.

A cold front has already passed through much of the area this morning and will continue pushing south through the rest of the area this morning. Behind that front, winds are turning out of the north northeast and becoming breezy. Wind speeds will increase to around 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 mph. One thing we may see happen is thicker smoke from our northwest move into our area. Unlike the last few days, some of that smoke may not just be in the upper levels of the atmosphere, but it may be closer to the surface. This could mean a reduction in our air quality as the day goes on. Meanwhile, expect cooler temperatures not only because of the cold front, but also because of the filtered sunshine. Highs will range from the mid 70s north to the lower 80s south.

Expect cooler temperatures tonight. Temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 40s and lower 50s. Skies may be mostly clear, but it may remain on the smoky side. Winds should get a little lighter as we move into the evening.

It may remain smoky again for tomorrow. Outside of the smoke, skies will be sunny. There may be some fog in the morning in western portions of the Local4 viewing area. There may be a little more range in high temperatures from the mid 70s east to the upper 80s west.

Beyond tomorrow, it is likely that smoke could remain a part of our forecast. That will be revisited each day moving forward in time. A warming trend back to above average high temperatures is anticipated. High temperatures on Friday will range from the mid 70s east to the upper 80s west. There will be a slight chance for rain in Eastern Nebraska late Thursday night and Friday morning. Warmer and somewhat windy conditions are expected this weekend. Highs on Saturday will range from the upper 70s east to the lower 90s west. Highs on Sunday will range from around 80° east to around 90° west. There will be a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms Sunday night. Highs in the 80s will be sticking around Monday and Tuesday with mainly dry weather anticipated.
