Nazareth 21, Freedom 7 – Rapid Recap

Nazareth Area High School’s football team passed its fourth test in a row on Friday night.

The top-ranked Blue Eagles defeated No. 2 Freedom 21-7 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Northampton Division action at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.

Turning point: A partially deflected punt set Freedom up at the Nazareth 26-yard line, trailing 7-0 in the second quarter.

The Patriots got down to the 5, where they faced a fourth-and-goal. Nazareth’s Alex Kwiatek intercepted a Freedom pass in the end zone and returned it to the Blue Eagles' 11.

Nazareth then embarked on an 89-yard, 11-play drive that took 3 minutes and 36 seconds off the clock. Quarterback Matt Bugbee ended the series with a 1-yard touchdown run and the Blue Eagles went up 14-0 with 2:07 to go in the first half.

Nazareth used tempo very effectively on the long scoring drive, catching Freedom with too many men on the field twice.

Freedom changes: Freedom was without quarterback Brian Taylor, a junior. Taylor started the Patriots' first two games. He was not with the Patriots on Friday night due to what coach Jason Roeder called “a residency issue.”

Ethan Neidig, making his first varsity start in replacement of Taylor, was 13-for-24 with 145 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Top performers: Jaiden Cabrera caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, and Joe Capobianco had three receptions with 117 yards and a score for Nazareth. Bugbee finished 17 of 26 for 260 yards and two TDs through the air.

Freedom’s Owen Johnson-McCormick had six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.

What it means: Nazareth improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the division. The Blue Eagles take on winless Liberty next.

Freedom (2-1, 2-1) will clash with rival Bethlehem Catholic, as it tries to adjust to what was a sudden lineup change over the past week.
