Dolly Parton deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Former President Barack Obama says so. And 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton agrees.
Parton wrote the iconic song “Jolene” and starred in the 1980 comedy classic “9 to 5.” That’s reason enough for the legendary entertainer to receive the nation’s highest civilian award.
But, of course, Parton has done much more. She launched the Dolly Parton Imagination Library that has been sending free books to children for the past 25 years, for example. And, last April, she donated $1 million for coronavirus-vaccine research.
On Monday, late-night TV talker Stephen Colbert asked Obama why he didn’t bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Parton during his eight years in office.
Obama’s response: “That’s a mistake -- I’m shocked. That was a screw-up. I’m surprised. I think I assumed that she had already got one, and that was incorrect.”
“She deserves one,” he added. “I’ll call Biden.”
Clinton, apparently watching the show, then beat him to it, directing a Twitter plea to President-elect Joe Biden:
“.@JoeBiden, please get this done.”
The 74-year-old Parton, who’s won 10 Grammy Awards, has been busier than ever the past couple of years. She was featured on Ken Burns’ 2019 “County Music” documentary series, fronted specials on both ABC and NBC, and was the subject of the popular podcast “Dolly Parton’s America.”
While doing media recently to promote her new Netflix movie “Christmas on the Square,” Parton said she won’t work as much in 2021 because she believes she’s overexposed right now.
“I’m sick of Dolly, ain’t you?” she said. “With all the stuff coming out, it’s like, ‘If I hear one more product, one more story, one more thing about Dolly Parton…’ I think, ‘Well, maybe I better hang it up for a while next year.’”
The White House on Wednesday announced that President Donald Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former college football coach Lou Holtz.
