MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior Olivia Carter won her second consecutive Big Ten title in the 200-yard butterfly in record-setting fashion to lead the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team on Friday (Feb. 26) inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The Wolverines remain in second place (940.5 points), a robust 235.5 points clear of third-place Indiana. Ohio State continues to lead the team race (1139.5 points).

Led by Carter, Michigan had four swimmers in the top eight of the 200-yard butterfly, collectively scoring 105 points. Carter, who went 1:53.28 to win this event last year, was even better this time around, pulling away from Northwestern's Miriam Guevara on the back half to win by nearly three seconds in 1:52.17. That is a new Big Ten, Big Ten Championships and school record. It is also an NCAA 'A' cut and stands as the second-best time in the country this year.

Behind Carter was junior Victoria Kwan in fourth (1:57.04), freshman Sophie Housey in fifth (1:57.29; the ninth-best performance in program history) and sophomore Megan Glass in eighth (1:59.71).

Youth was on display in the 100-yard backstroke, as three freshmen and one sophomore earned second swims. After swimming breaststroke on the team's 400-yard medley relay two days ago, sophomore Mariella Venter reverted to her more natural stroke, qualifying for the final and finishing fourth (53.02). It was a new personal record by nearly a second, making her the eighth-fastest performer in U-M history, while also representing a big personal improvement after finishing in a tie for 17th last year.

Freshman Noelle Kaufmann and Claire Donan got their second swims in the consolation final for the second consecutive day. Kaufmann took 13th (54.06), while Donan, who qualified from heat one in the morning, took 16th (54.87), though both were faster in preliminaries. Freshman Casey Chung was the other Wolverine to score, dropping nearly eight-tenths of a second from preliminaries to win the bonus final and finish 17th (53.54).

Freshman Claire Tuttle was the lone Wolverine entered in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing 32nd (1:04.36).

The Wolverines wrapped the night with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.99, NCAA 'A' cut), which featured fast splits from junior Maggie MacNeil (21.50) and senior Daria Pyshnenko (21.76) on the front half. Both swimmers did not have an individual event on their schedule Friday. The other two legs were comprised of freshman Claire Newman (22.50) and Carter (22.23), who had stood atop the 200-yard butterfly podium 30 minutes before the race.

Earlier in the day, all six divers scored on platform at the Big Ten Diving competition in West Lafayette, totaling 69.5 points for the team. [ Recap ]
