Track & Field Athletes Win Four SEC Titles on Final Day of SEC Championships - LSU Tigers - LSUSports.net

Fayetteville, Ark. –  It was another day of big time performances for the LSU track and field program as four athletes took home SEC titles – Terrance Laird won the 200 meters, Noah Williams captured the 400 meter title, Milan Young won the women's 60 meter hurdles and Damion Thomas was the champion in the men's 60 meter hurdles.

"I'm really proud of how our athletes represented us this weekend," head coach Dennis Shaver said. "To have five athletes win SEC individual titles is special and I'm so proud of them. And not just those who won either, I thought all of our athletes came out here and put it on the line. We'll get back to Baton Rouge and prep for the NCAA Championships."

The LSU men finished second at the meet with a team total of 93 points, and the LSU women took fourth place with 62 points.

The men's session featured a wild 35 minutes of action as three Tigers won individual titles and LSU racked up 40 of its 93 points in that time span. It started with Noah Williams in the men's 400 meter dash at 2:20 p.m. The transfer from Akron set the LSU school record with a time of 45.26 and was victorious to become LSU's first champion in the event since Robert Simmons won the event in 2009. The time of 45.26 broke Xavier Carter's school record of 45.28 that was set in 2006.




 


Immediately after Williams' victory, Damion Thomas and Eric Edwards Jr. lined up as the two favorites in the men's 60 meter hurdles. The duo hurdled to a one-two finish with a PR of 7.60 for Thomas and a season best of 7.67 for Edwards Jr.; that result earned LSU 18 team points.







Terrance Laird was the last of the trio to capture an SEC title as he dashed around the track in a SEC meet record time of 20.28 to win his second straight SEC title in the 200 meters. Laird's time was also an LSU school record as he took down Xavier Carter's previous LSU best of 20.30 that happened in 2006. Laird's 20.28 makes him the 10th fastest collegiate performer of all time and is a 2021 world lead.












LSU had five other scorers on the men's side Saturday. Freshman Sean Dixon-Bodie was the top freshman finisher in the triple jump with a PR of 53' 11.75" (16.45 meters) and it earned him a third place finish. Kenny Odinet scored at the SEC meet for the first time in his career with a clearance of 16' 10.75" (5.15 meters) to earn a fifth place showing. In the men's distance races, Eric Coston (8:06.14/5th/3,000 meters) and Davis Bove (4:01.22/4th/mile) pitched in points, and Dorian Camel (200 meters) was the final scorer for LSU.


Milan Young won her first ever SEC title with a wondrous personal best of 8.03 seconds in the finals of the women's 60 meter hurdles; the time of 8.03 is the ninth fastest in LSU history. Her win makes it 37 years in a row that a woman from the LSU program has won an SEC individual title.







Freshman Favour Ofili continues to amaze and ran a Nigerian indoor national record of 22.75 seconds in the women's 200 meter dash. The time of 22.75 earned her a bronze medal and ranks as the fifth fastest ever run by a U20 athlete in world history; it also is the third fastest time ever run in LSU indoor history and ranks No. 4 in the NCAA.. Ofili has done all of this since arriving on campus in January and will only get better as time comes.







Amber Anning ran a season best of 52.27 in the 400 meter dash to score for the second straight year in the event; the time of 52.27 earned her a fourth place finish. The LSU women's 4x400 meter relay of Symone Mason, Favour Ofili, Milan Young, and Amber Anning closed out the meet with a season best of 3:31.82

LSU will close out the 2021 indoor season with the NCAA Championships. The meet will be hosted at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, March 11-13.
