Three Big 12 records were established and 11 champions were crowned in the opening day of the 2021 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship at Texas Tech’s Sports Performance Center in Lubbock.
Through day one, Texas Tech paces the women’s field with 46 points followed by Kansas State (34), Oklahoma State (31), Texas (30.5) and Baylor (23) to round out the top-five. Texas led the men’s side after the first day with 33 points followed by Texas Tech (32), Kansas (28), Oklahoma State (24), Baylor (21) and Kansas (21) to close out the top-five.
After registering the collegiate record in the SPC earlier this season, KC Lightfoot set the Championship meet record and won a third-consecutive pole vault title with a clearance of 5.90 meters (19’ 4.25”) – just shy of his previous best (6.00m).
TTU’s Ruth Osoro set a Championship record and tied the No. 2 indoor mark in the world with her leap of 6.82 meters (22’ 4.50) to win the long jump. On the men’s side, Tech’s Jalen Seals registered a jump of 7.69 meters (25’ 2.75”) to win the event.
In the throws, TTU’s Seasons Usual repeated her first-place finish, set a Big 12 meet record and entered the top-10 nationally with her toss of 21.59m (70’ 10.00”). Red Raider Gabriel Oladipo inked a toss of 21.16m (69’ 5.25”) to place first, becoming the first Red Raider to win the event.
Texas freshman Kristin Blazevica registered 4,213 points to win the pentathlon – the most points scored in the Championship since 2015. She won the crown by placing first in the long jump (6.2m, 20’ 4.25”) and 800-meters (2:22.10) and finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.57) and shot put (12.38m, 40’ 7.50”).
Iowa State swept the 5,000-meter race, as Cailie Logue captured the women’s title for the second year with a run of 16:27.10 and Wesley Kiptoo won the men’s event with his career-best pace of 13:42.52.
In the women’s distance medley relay, West Virginia captured its first title since joining the Conference as the quartet of Hayley Jackson, Tessa Constantine, Jo-Lauren Keane and Ceili McCabe ran a time of 11:21.35 to capture the team title and 10 points for the Mountaineers.The Oklahoma State tandem of Juan Diego Castro, Justin Long, Alex Stitt and Ryan Schoppe captured the men’s time for the Cowboys for the first time since 2017 with a run of 9:48.71.
Senior Tuesdi Tidwell of Baylor cleared a height 4.37 meters (14’ 4.00”) to win the pole vault.
Championship Saturday begins at 11 a.m. CT with the men’s heptathlon. Field events start at 1 p.m. CT, followed by running events at 2 p.m. CT.
