Celebrated on the third Monday of February, Presidents Day is a commemoration of the Feb. 22 birthday of George Washington and always falls near the Feb. 12 birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
George Washington’s Birthday was the first federal holiday to honor an individual’s birth date, according to the National Archives.
Congress designated Feb. 22 as a holiday for all federal workers in 1885. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February. The position of the holiday between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln gave rise to the popular name of Presidents Day.
This year, Presidents Day falls on the Feb.. 15.
