Surrounded by 50,000 blooming daffodils is a good way to say hello to spring.

The annual Daffodil Day arrived at Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit and it’s a sell-out.

Bulbs were first planted by the Wisner family who owned the house in 1889. In the 1920′s the Reeves family expanded the varieties and increased plantings.

The property was purchased from the Reed family to preserve it as an arboretum in 1974.

“The event has staggered entry times every half hour from 11 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m.,” said Irene Druskin of Reeves-Reed.

Visitors needed to make reservations online for an entry time, walk-ins are not allowed. Masks are required.

The giant bowl of daffodils at the farm was carved by glaciers and visitors are allowed to walk through the field and look up at the flowers.

“Had a lot of fun, great time for families after the last year,” said Lealanie Roberts who brought her daughter Clara. “It was getting out on a day like this,” Roberts added.

The event was canceled last year but a normal Daffodil Day has 1,000 to 2,000 visitors, said Jackie Kondel, Executive Director of Reeves-Reed Arboreteum.

Today we have 1,400 people coming and have had to turn people away, added Kondel.

The bowl was filled with fully bloomed daffodils in a variety of colors.

“See a lot of smiling faces when they come in and a lot of smiling faces when they leave,” Kondel said.

“It feels really good,” Kondel said.

Daffodil Day had a $10 admission fee and included arts, crafts, and live music among other activities.

The arboretum is open seven days a week at no charge but a with a suggested donation of $5.
