PHILADELPHIA – Junior Nick O'Day had four hits on the day and freshman Frank Elissalt fired six strong innings in a game one victory as the La Salle University baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with St. Bonaventure from Hank DeVincent Field. La Salle won game one, 3-2, before a 2-0 setback in game two.
Game 1 – La Salle 3, St. Bonaventure 2 (F/7)
- After a scoreless first, St. Bonaventure scored an unearned run in the second inning on an error to take the game's first lead.
- La Salle answered back in the bottom of the second though as O'Day hit a leadoff triple and then came in to score the tying run on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman Will Binder.
- Elissalt was dialed in early on with five strikeouts over the first three innings as he and Bonnies starter Elijah Baez were in a heated pitcher's duel.
- The Bonnies went back on top in the fifth due to another error, capitalizing with an RBI double to make it 2-1.
- However, O'Day had other ideas, driving in the tying run in graduate student Ryan Guckin on an RBI double to left center. Moments later, he crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put the Explorers in front, 3-2.
- Senior Colin Kennedy came on in relief in the seventh inning and struck out a pair en route to his fifth save of the season.
- In game two, the Bonnies jumped in front with two runs in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.
- After that, sophomore Jordan Morales settled in nicely, allowing only four hits the rest of the game to keep the St. Bonaventure offense at bay.
- However, La Salle couldn't get anything going against Bonnies starting pitcher Donovan Moffat, who finished with six strikeouts and allowed four hits over 7.0 scoreless innings.
- The Explorers had plenty of opportunities with runners on base in every inning aside from the first but just couldn't capitalize.
- O'Day went 4-for-5 over the two games with two runs, two doubles, a triple, an RBI and a walk. He was responsible for all three of La Salle's runs in the game one win.
- Elissalt allowed just two unearned runs while scattering three hits and fanning five over 6.0 innings pitched to improve to 5-1 on the season. He is now ninth in single-season program history with 72 strikeouts on the season.
- With a double in the first game, Guckin took sole possession of eighth place on the program's career doubles list with 42.
- Morales was impressive in a tough-luck loss in game two, striking out a career-high eight batters and allowing just two runs over the full 7.0 innings.
- At 8-3, it's still the best Atlantic 10 start ever for the Explorers, who will aim to win the series against the Bonnies on Sunday with first pitch of the finale set for 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
