TETON VILLAGE, Wyo. — A small tree fire off of the Sundance trail at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is contained and under control, said JHMR spokesperson Anna Cole. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Smoke became visible in the late afternoon of April 1, also known as Gaper Day, a traditional day for debauchery and costumes at Jackson Hole. According to JHMR, a large number of staff including patrollers and lift ops were actively patrolling and at the ready in preparation for the day, so were able to be on-scene quickly.
“The Sundance trail is in close proximity to the Bridger Gondola, so containment was a priority for the team,” Cole told Buckrail.
In addition to the fire, the Casper lift was closed early (around 2 p.m.) due to too many individuals ignoring the rules set place by JHMR. These rules include ‘no drinking on lift’ as well as the standard JHMR mask requirement.
“The Resort has worked tirelessly over the past year to keep visitors and staff healthy and safe,” said Cole. “For this behavior to happen near the end of the season after all this hard work feels disrespectful. It’s really disappointing.”
JHMR was alerted to the fire at 4:40 p.m. and staff were able to control and put out the fire by 5:20 p.m.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as possible,” said Cole.
