EUGENE, Ore. – It was a Senior Day to remember for the No. 46 Oregon women's tennis team. After honoring its four graduating seniors before the match, the Ducks knocked off Stanford for the first time in program history with a thrilling 4-3 win over the No. 25 Cardinal.
The match came down to Uxia Martinez Moral at the No. 4 spot, and she delivered with a gutsy effort in a three-set win after one of the seniors, Julia Eshet, tied the match at three with a win at the No. 5 spot.
"You always want to have a great Senior Day and a great senior send-off when it's your last home match," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "Our message all week was 'let's give our seniors a nice day.' You couldn't have scripted it better to have us get the doubles point, to have Julia get the third point and then have Uxia bounce back like she did today."
How it Happened: After dropping the doubles point on Friday for only the second time all year, the Ducks bounced back by coasting to the opening point. Eshet and Allison Mulville continued their dominance at No. 3 doubles with a 6-0 win before Janice Tjen and Lillian Mould followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to make it 1-0 Oregon.
Stanford would put up the next three points however to move a point away from clinching, but the Tjen came through with another ranked win at No. 1 singles to put up the second Oregon point. She erased an early deficit in the first set to win 7-5 in the opening frame before finishing the sweep with a 6-3 second-set win.
Eshet tied things up with a tough win of her own at No. 5, taking two tightly-contested sets including a tiebreaker in the second to win, 7-5, 7-6(6).
That set things up for Martinez Moral, who had the match fall on her shoulders for the second straight contest. She came up just short in Friday's loss to Cal, but delivered on Sunday, hitting a forehand down the line to win in the third set, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and lock up the victory.
"(Uxia) was in that position to clinch on Friday and didn't end up getting it," said Nagle. "She was in position again today and was able to do it against Stanford, an unbelievable program that won the national championship in 2019. We had never beaten them in school history so I'd say the girls gave the seniors a great send-off."
Senior Sendoff: Prior to the match, Oregon honored four student-athletes who have either already earned their undergraduate degrees or will be receiving it this spring. Eshet received her degree in journalism last spring and is currently eighth on the school's all-time career singles wins list. Another fifth-year player in the program, Rifanty Kahfiani will earn her degree in business administration at the end of the spring while Plobrung Plipuech will get her degree in general social science at the end of the quarter as well. Paiton Wagner, who spent this season as a student assistant coach after playing for three years, also finished her business administration degree and is currently pursuing a master's in conflict and dispute resolution.
