Second round action will begin for the Eagles at 10 AM on Monday off hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available through www.GolfStat.com.
"I'm proud of how we competed today," said head coach Andrew Danna. "We're looking forward to getting back out here tomorrow to take advantage of another chance to get better."
No. 13 Liberty leads the nine-team field after shooting 273 (11-under par) in the first round. Jacksonville is just ahead of the Eagles with a score of 280, while Kennesaw State is fourth at 287. No. 18 North Florida is fifth at 288.
The 285 score for FGCU was its third lowest round for the program in the ASUN Championship Tournament. In 2010, the Eagles shot 282 in the third round, while in 2011, they carded a 284 in the second. The Green and Blue were also the only team in the first round of the 2021 championship to have all five players shoot under 73 for the day.
In addition to Holmgren and Madsen, Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) was third for the Eagles with a one-over 72, while Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) tied for 16th alongside Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) as both shot 73 for the day.
Jacksonville's Michael Sakane led the 45-player field with an ASUN record-tying 64 on Sunday.
Holmgren played a nearly flawless round with just one bogey on the day. After hitting the turn at even, he carded birdies on No. 10 and No. 12 before going par on the final six holes of the day.
Madsen carded four birdies on the day to balance out four bogeys, while Capan had a birdie on No. 12 getting to even on the back nine. He was par on five of the next six holes, but a bogey on No. 15 gave him the 72 for the day.
Hopkins had a strong start with a two-under after the first nine. Back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13 followed by a double-bogey on No. 14 pushed him to two over. He managed to finish the round with four straight pars to limit the damage to just 73 for the day.
Cherichella started three over through the first six holes, but an eagle on No. 7 pulled him to one over at the turn. Six pars and a birdie on the first seven of the back nine dropped him back to even, but bogeys on No. 18 and No. 19 put him in the tie with Hopkins at two over.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
