On Wednesday, the New York Mets announced the 26-man roster they will begin the 2021 season with. We pretty much knew what the squad may look like with a few days remaining in camp, but now it’s officially official.
It should also be noted that Luis Rojas announced on Tuesday afternoon the Mets’ five man taxi-squad will consist of RHP Trevor Hildenberger, LHP Stephen Tarpley, INF Jose Peraza, OF Mallex Smith, and C Caleb Joseph.
Now here’s how the Mets are shaping up to begin the 2021 season:
Projected Starting Lineup
- Brandon Nimmo – CF
- Francisco Lindor – SS
- Michael Conforto – RF
- Pete Alonso – 1B
- Dominic Smith – LF
- Jeff McNeil – 2B
- J.D. Davis – 3B
- James McCann – C
- Pitcher’s Spot
This is not the official lineup, but may be what we can expect to see on Thursday night. We saw this group run out numerous times together towards the end of camp. This offense is as deep as it gets, and has a ton of firepower. As we saw throughout camp, when it rains it pours with this unit.
They all seemed to feed off of each other, and when one guy gets things started, they all just kept the line moving. This offense is certainly going to be very fun to watch throughout this season. Hopefully 2021 is the season Jacob deGrom actually gets some run support for once!
Bench
Let’s be honest, this Mets bench is as solid as it’s been in years. Luis Guillorme figures to have carved out more playing time with his strong performance this spring. We all know he is a defensive wizard, but he has developed very nicely at the plate as well.
Kevin Pillar really impressed with the bat in camp, hitting .317 with five extra base hits, a .378 OBP, and just ten strikeouts in 41 at-bats. Once Jose Martinez went down with a torn meniscus, it seemed as though Almora was a lock for the Opening Day roster.
I’m very interested to see how Luis Rojas will handle the late-inning defensive replacements with this group.
Starting Rotation
We knew deGrom and Stroman were locked into the top two spots here. Luis Rojas confirmed on Tuesday, the Mets would be pitching Walker fourth to break up the lefties in the backend of the rotation.
With the off day following Opening Day, the Mets are lining things up so that deGrom will pitch two of the first five games the first time around. After that, either Lucchesi or an opener will pitch on Wednesday April 7th against the Phillies.
Carlos Carrasco will begin the season on the IL, but Rojas said he recently began a throwing program and he is progressing “really really well.” Noah Syndergaard has also been responding well, and he topped out at 97 MPH in a recent bullpen session.
Bullpen
Injured List Moves
- RHP Carlos Carrasco – 10-day with right hamstring strain
- RHP Noah Syndergaard – 60-day due to Tommy John surgery
- RHP Drew Smith – 10-day with right shoulder soreness
- RHP Seth Lugo – 1o-day following right elbow surgery
- 1B/OF Jose Martinez – 60-day with torn meniscus
The top four guys in this unit were locks all throughout spring. Diaz and Castro were absolutely light’s out throughout camp, and both May and Loup threw really well. With Seth Lugo out to begin the year, the Mets are going to need these four to step up big-time in the backend of the pen.
Jacob Barnes was also impressive in camp, and threw well pitching ahead of Lucchesi as the opener during his last outing of the spring. Gsellman, Familia, and Betances are all question marks, but the Mets are going to need them to figure things out.
Overall, this Mets team is looking very solid from top to bottom this season. There is a ton of depth on both sides of the ball, and this figures to be a very successful 2021 campaign for the New York Mets.
Tomorrow’s the day Mets fans, here we go, Let’s Go Mets!
