NEW PORT RICHEY — Pasco County’s 26th annual celebration of Earth Day, a day of family fun centered on the environment, is planned from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.

Presented by Covanta Pasco, the events will be at the Crews Lake Wilderness Park, 16739 Crews Lake Drive in Spring Hill. Activities include a Florida native plant sale, upcycle vendors, a ladybug release and educational displays. Presentations by Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife are also planned and there will be a display including Spike, a 10-foot alligator from Croc Encounters.

There will also be on-site recycling and waste disposal opportunities. Those include household hazardous waste collection, electronics recycling of up to two TVs for free, document shredding, limited to five boxes or bags per person from 9 a.m. until noon and mercury disposal with a $5 gift card given for thermostats and thermometers.

The UF/IFAS Pasco County Cooperative extension service is offering two workshops at the event. They are on rain water harvesting at 10 a.m. and composting at noon. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required by Tuesday April 20. To register for the rain water harvesting workshop, visit: bit.ly/RainWaterWorkshop. To register for the compost workshop, visit: bit.ly/Compost2021.

The socially distanced event promotes environmental education, volunteerism and a commitment to a greener community.
