ELKINS — The Tygart Valley United Way will provide renovations and repairs during the annual Day of Action Monday.

The event will begin with a kickoff from 11 a.m. to noon at Elkins City Park. Nearly 200 volunteers from local business and community partners will begin work at noon.

Five non-profit organization facilities will receive the renovation work Monday afternoon.

The United Way Day of Action “is designed to foster service and volunteering in the community,” a United Way press release stated. “Participants from companies and organizations will spend the day helping local non-profit agencies. These volunteers recognize the benefit of having a firsthand opportunity to learn how United Way and local organizations are meeting the human service needs in our community.”

“This is to help out some of the different agencies that we fund,” said Brittny Drennen, Regional Engagement Director with United Way in Elkins and surrounding counties. “We weren’t able to hold any events last year so we’re excited to be able to do this. It’s a really great way for us to give back to our community.”

Volunteers will be making stops at the Randolph County Public Library (beautifying the library grounds), the Randolph-Tucker Children’s Advocacy Center (staining staircase and privacy fence), Catholic Charities of WV (working on food pantry and stocking freezers), the Randolph County Humane Society (replacing fence at play yards) and the Elkins YMCA (landscaping).

In Barbour County, volunteers will be doing work at the Barbour County Heart and Hand House, updating the community garden market building at the facility. The Senior Center will be the other stop in Barbour County, and volunteers will look to get the facility in tip-top shape for the summer.

The organization will also be working at the Tucker County Family Resource Network, where it will pack backpacks to help children get ready for the upcoming school year.

On Monday, TVUW will host a kickoff gathering at the Elkins City Park at 11 a.m. Pizza and T-shirts will be given to all the volunteers who help out with the projects and the volunteer work will be from noon until 4 p.m.

“Just in Elkins we are looking to get at least 50 or 60 volunteers,” said Drennen. “We would like to get donors and businesses to sign up as a group together. We would like to get some of those companies that already give to the United Way and who would allow their employees to use the day as kind of a team-building exercise.”
