Education dangerous when not supporting freedom of speech, freedom of religion - Marshall Independent

To the editor:

“Conservatives find education dangerous,” wrote columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. (June 28). He also stated, “An opinion one can’t defend using actual facts and recognizable reason is an opinion not worth having.”

Actual facts and reason. If those two elements alone make an opinion worth having, what is he eliminating? God and faith.

Pitts questioned Gov. Ron De Santis’ request for “intellectual diversity” among teachers. When intellectual diversity is not honored situations like the hanging of the LGBTQ+ flag in the Marshall Middle School occur. Much has been said lately about supporting this community in our midst. Why is more not being said about supporting students who want to be faithful to God’s Word?

Pitts also questioned De Santis’ concern of teachers/schools seeking to indoctrinate students. If teachers only teach the “fact” of evolution, not mentioning that there is also faith in God’s creation or do not allow students to express their belief in creation, isn’t that practicing indoctrination?

Or how about teaching children that they were randomly assigned a sex at birth?

Who set the standard for the worth of an opinion — that it has to be based on actual facts and recognizable reason? It wasn’t God, for in the Bible we find these words, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command .. .”

Are we proud of the fact that a student has dejectedly stated, “It is difficult being a Christian at the Marshall High School? Is it wrong to “protect kids raised on mom’s and dad’s steady diet (of thoughts) as Leonard Pitts suggests?

God says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” And “Fathers . . . bring them (your children) up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Education is dangerous, I believe, when it seeks to challenge and not support our precious freedom of speech and our precious freedom of religion.
