It’s Day 3 of the Colorado high school state track and field meet at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. The Denver Post is there throughout the weekend providing live coverage. Refresh this page for the latest updates and results, in addition to the daily schedule of events, which is at the bottom of this page.

Updates

(1:58 p.m.) Short season. A month ago, Frederick’s Ryan Chacon had yet to run a single race in his senior track and field season as he rehabbed a torn meniscus suffered during basketball practice in February. Now, he’s a state champion. After competing for the first time three weeks ago, Chacon capped a trying senior year by winning the 4A 200-meter dash in 21.96 seconds. — Matt Schubert

(1:36 p.m.) Nine down, one to go. Niwot’s Taylor James came into this weekend’s meet staring down a chance at 10 career state titles. She’s got one more left after racing past Mullen’s Kaleah Ruff to win the 4A 200-meter dash in 24.61 seconds for her ninth state crown (including relays). The Stanford commit will close things out with a leg in Niwot’s 4-by-400 relay, which the Cougars are favored to win. — Matt Schubert

(1:15 p.m.) Photo finish. In the closest race of the day, only one one-hundreth of a second separated Valor Christian’s Camille Peisner from Denver East’s Kyairra Reigh in the 5A 200-meter dash. Peisner surged ahead at the start of the stretch run before Reigh slowly reeled her back in, but she was never quite able to close the gap as Peisner won in 23.92 seconds. It was the Stanford commit’s second state title of the day after taking the 100 in the morning. Reigh won the 400 earlier in the day. — Matt Schubert

(1:02 p.m.) Witt’s way. The duel between Cherry Creek’s Parker Wolfe and Mountain Vista’s Harrison Witt in the 5A boys 1,600-meter run lived up to its billing. Wolfe led most of the way until Witt made his move entering the final lap. The senior then surged past Wolfe and blazed down the stretch in a full kick to break his own state record with a time of 4 minutes, 4.36 seconds. Of course, he also shattered the all-class state meet record in the process held by Widefield’s Rich Martinez (4:10.98) since 1981. For what it’s worth, Wolfe also beat that meet record with a second-place time of 4:10.09. So, yeah, pretty epic race. — Matt Schubert

(12:29 p.m.) Stanton puts her stamp on state. Ainsley Stanton has made her mark on her first ever state meet competition. The Heritage Christian freshman is now 2-for-2 in state titles, the first in the 1A girls 3200 (12:44.87) and the second in the 1600 (5:43.77).

(12:11 p.m.) James keeps cruising. Niwot senior Taylor James secured her second title of the weekend in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.69. The Stanford commit, who already had four individual state championships under her belt coming into the weekend, is eyeing another in the 200 and could add another relay crown to her collection in the 4-by-400. As for the Niwot girls, they probably already have the 4A team title in hand, with the next closest competitor (Battle Mountain) in the  standings more than 50 points behind. — Carly Ebisuya

(12:05 p.m.) Reigh of sunshine. Denver East senior Kyairra Reigh ran the fifth-fastest girls 400 meter run in Colorado history to win the 5A final with a blistering pace of 53.27 seconds. She was two seconds off the state record set by fellow Denver East Angel Arria Minor in 2018. This is Reigh’s first individual title, but she is part of the fastest 800-meter medley relay in state meet history, which was set in 2018, and, of course, also included Minor.

In the boys 5A 400, Cherry Creek’s Ky Oday pulled away on the turn to beat the rest of the field in 48 seconds flat, while William Merrick from Castle View finished second in a time of 48.49. Oday finished runner-up in the 100-meter dash earlier Saturday, and still has the 200 later this afternoon. — Brendan Ploen

(11:56 a.m.) Going for three. Coal Ridge junior Peyton Garrison is 2/3 of the way to sweeping the 3A girls sprints after dominating runs in the 100 and 400. The latter included an impressive close down the stretch as she finished in 56.23 seconds. Next up: the 200, followed by the last leg of the 4-by-400 relay to close things out.

(11:45 a.m.) Titan up. Crested Butte’s Connor Williams pulled away on the far turn in the Boys 2A 1,600-meter run from Custer County’s Micah Zeller, who was with Williams neck-and-neck heading into the turn. Williams won the race in 4:19.99, while Zeller was second in 4:23.20. Williams was a half second off of breaking the 2A meet record of 4:19.54.

In the 2A girls 1,600, Peyton junior Eiowyn Dalbec won in 5:24.65, beating Mallory Slaazar of Buena Vista, who took second (5:30.30). — Brendan Ploen

(11:31 a.m.) Banning Lewis first. Banning Lewis Prep Academy senior Mikayla Hutchison claimed her school’s first state title in the 2A girls 100-meter dash. For her, this win is the first of many. Her 12.53-second time capped off an undefeated 100-meter season for the Western Colorado commit.

“To be my school’s first ever state champion, it means so much, I’m definitely overwhelmed with emotion,” Hutchison said. “Now I’m ready to go kill it in the 300 (hurdles).”

(11:11 a.m.): Kurjak strikes again. A day after setting the Class 4A meet record in the high jump (7-0), Longmont senior Eddie Kurjak added another state title in the 4A triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 5.75 inches.

(10:39 a.m.) Closing kick. Valor Christian’s Camille Peisner showed off a great closing kick in the 5A girls 100-meter dash, surging ahead in the final 50 meters to claim the title in 11.88. Eaglecrest’s Sterling Brassfield needed no such theatrics, leading almost from the start to claim the 5A boys 100 in 10.63. — Matt Schubert

(10:05 a.m.) Hurdling into action. The first set of track events is in the books, with the boys 110 hurdles and girls 100-meter hurdles. Sand Creek’s Jahzara Davis pulled a minor upset in the 4A girls hurdles, edging Niwot’s Kimora Northrup by .08 seconds in 14.62. — Matt Schubert

(8:30 a.m.) All the marbles. This is it: The third and final day of the 2021 CHSAA state track and field championships. What comes next will be a fast and furious ride to the finish line as 78 individuals, 20 relays and 10 teams are crowned state champions over the next 10 hours. There will be drama. There will be down-to-the-wire finishes. And there may be a few weather delays. No matter what, it should be a whole lot of fun. — Matt Schubert
