Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and is typically filled with roadtrips, cookouts, parades and family gatherings.
The national holiday, like everything else in our lives currently, will be different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditions will be set aside this year, but we can still honor the day, and what it represents, from home.
Here are several simple ways to celebrate the holiday and honor the American men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Fly a flag
One of the simplest and most poignant ways to honor fallen members of the military is to place an American flag outside your home. You can also adorn the interior and exterior of your home in red, white and blue decor or create some edible red, white and blue snacks.
Chalk art
Like many families have done throughout the pandemic, use colored chalk to create a patriotic drawing or to pen a thank-you message to veterans on your driveway or nearby sidewalk.
Hand-drawn images of the American flag, stars or an eagle should ha! I have a f;ag, bnutbe well-received. Some phrases could include "honoring those who served," or "we love America's heroes."
Patriotic sing-a-long
Warm up your vocal chords and sing some of America's most popular patriotic songs. Don't like to sing? You can watch the National Memorial Day concert on PBS. The concert will be broadcast at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. Because of the virus, the traditional live concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol will not be held, but the broadcast will feature new music and stories about veterans as well as music and segments from past concerts.
History lesson
The meaning of the holiday is what matters most. Take a moment to reflect on past world conflicts, and to remember and honor military members who died in the service of our country. Also note how Memorial Day differs from Veterans Day and that the two national holidays are not interchangeable.
Dress in red, white and blue
Show your pride in America by wearing your favorite red, white and blue clothes. Have several? Make it a weekend-long activity or host a patriotic fashion show.
Donate flowers in memory of a fallen hero
You can recognize veterans by donating flowers to their grave through Memorial Day Flowers, an organization that coordinates placing flowers for interned veterans. If you want to honor a loved one in your own hometown, order flowers from a local florist and head to the cemetery to pay your respects. Just keep social distancing and other safety guidelines in mind during your outing.
Write letters to soldiers
Military personnel currently serving will also appreciate your thoughts on Memorial Day. Children can write letters of thanks for their service, send a handmade craft oror ship supplies or comfort items through an organization like Operation Gratitude.
