EAST PEORIA (HOI) - If you walk along the Riverfront Park you may see the Veterans' Memorial there has been refurbished just in time for memorial day.
The Riverfront Freedom Memorial was originally constructed in 2009, but had started to show some wear and tear. The city of East Peoria says visitor concerns about the memorial's condition were coming in more frequently, including those from people who had purchased memorial pavers.
With COVID-19, the project was pushed back, but the city decided it needed to be done in time for memorial day.
"Because of the COVID and the budget and the constraints that were put on the city and our community, we pulled together as a community. We talk about community pride, this is really a project that demonstrates that community pride," said Director of Building and Inspections, Robert Cole.
The Peoria Chamber of Commerce is still selling bricks for families who want to honor fallen loved ones.
