Memorial Day weekend weather: Some things to know for Detroit, Traverse City and all of Michigan - MLive.com

Let’s take a look at the Memorial Day weekend weather for Michigan.

I had a friend text me a screenshot of his phone with a weather app showing forecast high and low temperatures and a weather icon for each day. The icons had a lightning bolt for Saturday, Sunday and Monday at his cabin up north. He responded that the weekend weather doesn’t look good, and he might not go up north.

I was amazed he made that decision off a small picture with a lightning bolt. That’s why you still need us human meteorologists, folks. I’ll talk you through what the general weather scenario will be this weekend.

First off, we meteorologists use the same computer models as automated phone apps do. The issue with a weather app is it usually has to pick one model and give you the straight output. Humans do a blend of what we are seeing working the best in the recent past.

I guess I’m trying to say watch for some tweaks to the forecast as we get closer.

Right now it doesn’t look like a flawless weekend, but it does look like the warmest, almost summery weekend we have had so far in May.

Let’s be realistic. It’s a four day holiday period. It would be rare for any four day stretch at this time of year to be entirely dry. This weekend won’t be that rare totally dry stretch. This weekend also won’t be in a persistent wet pattern. If we say you kind of start the weekend Friday morning, there are 96 hours in the holiday weekend. Any one spot may have a maximum of 12 hours of showers total in that 96 hour period. Many spots will only have six hours of rain.

The shower pattern will be split into two areas - southern Lower Michigan and northern Lower Michigan/the Upper Peninsula.

Southern Lower Michigan will only have a chance of showers Memorial Day.

Northern Lower and Upper Michigan could have a short round of showers Saturday and then a better chance Memorial Day.

We can handle that and still have a good time.

We you not enjoy a holiday weekend with only 12.5 percent wet weather?

Now that I have the rain dilemma out of the way, let’s talk temperatures. The weekend won’t be a “sweat like it’s Fourth of July” warm weekend. It will be a very pleasantly warm, almost summery weekend.

I’ve lined up the temperature forecast graphics to show you a glimpse at each day.

Friday high temperatures

High temperature forecast Friday, May 22, 2020

Saturday high temperatures

High temperature forecast Saturday, May 23, 2020

Sunday high temperatures

High temperature forecast for Sunday, May 24, 2020

Monday high temperatures

High temperature forecast for Monday, May 25, 2020

The progression of high temperature maps I just showed you above should give you a good idea it’s going to be a great weekend with regards to temperatures. We will be flirting with 80 degrees in the southern half of Lower Michigan both Sunday and Memorial Day.

So don’t get your spirits down on the weekend weather. Don’t let the weather app icon make you cancel plans. To me it looks like generally a very nice, almost summery weekend.
