DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney today called on two groups behind many of the protests following the killing of George Floyd to denounce last night's violence.
In a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Mahoney called on M Adams of Freedom Inc., and Brandi Grayson of Urban Triage to publicly disparage the acts of violence last night.
The damage and vandalism early Wednesday grew out of a protest sparked by the arrest Tuesday of a bat-wielding man shouting at diners with a bull-horn. The man had also helped organize other peaceful demonstrations.
Mahoney said a firebomb, tossed through windows of the City County Building, landed near Dane County's 911 Center.
Dispatchers evacuated from the primary 911 center and moved to the county's back-up area.
Sheriff's Deputies put out the flames which began near boxes of paper, according to Mahoney.
Mahoney says he's supportive of the aims of Urban Triage and Freedom Inc., which receive taxpayer support, and said he would gladly meet with them.
"They can be a voice of reason in their demands and requests," he said.
Last night's demonstration grew increasingly violent overnight, with people pulling down the "Forward" statue on one corner of the square and the Col. Hans Christian Heg likeness on another.
Both statues have since been recovered.
State Sen. Tim Carpenter, who was filming the protest, says he was attacked, and later collapsed and was helped by a 27 News crew.
Mahoney said he would call in additional resources tonight.
