Election Day 2020: Voter guide to the New York primary election - syracuse.com

rintongs.blogspot.com

New Yorkers will go to the polls today to vote for local, state and federal candidates in a primary election that will be the first in the state’s history where most people vote by mail.

All New Yorkers have the option to vote by mail this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ballots must be postmarked by today and received by June 30 to be counted in the election.

State election officials expect 70% or more of the primary ballots to arrive by mail, meaning that election winners might not be known for weeks.

The top of the ballot includes New York’s postponed presidential primary and primary elections for Congress and state Assembly.

Here's information about how, when and where you can vote, and who you will find on the ballot:

Who's on the ballot?

Democrats will choose from among 11 candidates on the ballot in New York’s presidential primary election. Former Vice President Joe Biden has clinched the Democratic nomination. But the outcome of Tuesday’s election will affect the final delegate count and the ability of the other candidates to influence the party’s platform.

In Central New York, Democratic voters will choose between Dana Balter and Francis Conole in the 24th Congressional District. The winner will challenge Rep. John Katko, R-Camillus, in November.

Republican voters will choose between former Rep. Claudia Tenney and George Phillips in the 22nd Congressional District.

In a Republican primary in the 126th Assembly District, LaFayette Town Supervisor Danny Fitzpatrick faces John Lemondes, the GOP’s designated candidate.

In Syracuse, Democratic voters will choose from among five candidates seeking two open spots to serve as Syracuse City Court judges. The Independence Party and Conservative Party also will hold judicial primaries.

When do I vote?

Polls will be open across the state from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. today.

For many counties in Upstate New York, the hours are extended from previous primary elections, when polls opened at noon.

Who can vote?

Only registered voters in a political party can vote in their party’s primary election. It’s too late to register to vote in the election, or to change your party enrollment. The deadline was Feb. 14 to change party enrollment and May 29 to register as a new voter.

Where do I vote?

Voters in New York can look up polling places on the state Board of Elections websiteor by calling the county board of elections:

Onondaga County: 315-435-8683

Oswego County: 315-349-8350

Cayuga County: 315-253-1285

Wayne County: 315-946-7400

What if I'm not permitted to vote at a polling place?

If your name does not appear in the book of registered voters, but you believe you are eligible to vote, you can ask for an affidavit ballot. After Tuesday, election officials will check their records to determine if you were eligible to vote. Your vote will be counted if they determine you were eligible.

What you can't wear when voting

Any voter wearing a candidate’s name on their clothing will be asked to cover up or remove the clothing before being issued a ballot.

Can I still vote by absentee ballot?

All eligible primary voters in New York had the option to vote by absentee ballot this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Those voters were mailed absentee ballot applications with pre-paid return envelopes.

Applications for an absentee ballot had to be postmarked by a June 16 deadline.

The completed ballots must be returned with a postmark no later than today. Ballots will be counted if they are received by a county Board of Elections by June 30.

How do I find election results?

Syracuse.com will have live coverage as the results are tabulated after polls close at 9 p.m. today.
