Letter: What freedom means - Northwest Herald

Freedom is a precious commodity that is lacking in this world. Hard to secure, and harder to keep.

We citizens of the U.S.A. are the most blessed people in the world. To have this ultimate luxury. Was it purchased by Hollywood? Maybe.

Was it purchased by media? Maybe. Was it purchased by religious leaders? Maybe.

Our freedom definitely was bought with the blood of many Americans of different races, religions and ethnic backgrounds.

Many an American patriot, both male and female, who died for our freedoms: 4,435 Revolutionary War; 2,260 War of 1812; 13,283 Mexican War; 618,222 Civil War (360,222 Union); 2,446 Spanish-American War; 116,516 World War I; 405,399 World War II; 36,574 Korean War; 58,220 Vietnam War; 383 Gulf War; 6,773 Iraq/Afghanistan War (War on Terrorism).

Whether they agreed with our government or not, they put their lives on the line and paid the ultimate sacrifice. I am proud to be a citizen of the U.S. and proud to be counted among those who served.

We must never forget the sacrifice that the fallen have paid, this and every Memorial Day.

"Those who cannot remember the past are comdemned to repeat it." (George Santayana, 1905)
