RAPID CITY, S.D. — Through sunshine, rain, winds, heat, even tropical storms… a group of women have ridden their motorcycle through it all, for a worthy cause.
The Women’s Freedom Ride was started in 2013 to promote fellowship and support for all women bikers. They aim to bring awareness about their impact on the motorcycle community, all while donating proceeds from their events to veteran groups. The Women’s Freedom Ride is comprised of many events, and starting Thursday June 6 in South Carolina, more than 40 bikers are began a 16-day ride through 20-states. They arrived at Black Hills Harley-Davidson on Tuesday June 16 and were led by the local chapter of Harley Owner’s Group (H.O.G.) on a ride through the Black Hills. CEO of the Women’s Freedom Ride, Karen Collins, is proud of the work the group does for veterans, and to be part of the ever growing group of motorcycling women. She said,
“These women are amazing, I call them my sisters. They’re my sisters of the wind and believe me, they are just like a sister to me. I know they have my back, my support, and they’re helping me to support others.”
A few local women made the ride to South Carolina to embark on the 16-day ride with others from around the nation. By the end of the ride, most participants will have logged around 65-hundred miles, riding about 450 miles a day. All proceeds from the freedom ride will be donated to 2 veteran support groups, infinite warrior and 22-kill. Among their many accomplishments, in 2019, the Women’s Freedom Ride brought together 762 women riders to break the U.S. record for the highest amount of women drivers riding in a single event for nearly 8 miles.
