Rockland — Freedom Leigh Hamlin was an unforgettable soul who touched the lives of all who were privileged to know her. Whether it was through her passion of crafting jewelry, the talent of her artistic paintings, her athletic ability or her gift of love and friendship, to know Freedom was to know love.

Unexpected and much too soon, her spirit was called home June 13, 2020. She was 39 years old.

She was born at Pen Bay Medical Center to Heidi Stevens and David Hamlin Jan. 27, 1981, after the American hostages were freed from Iran, thus the name Freedom.

Freedom grew up in Rockland, a graduate of Rockland District High School where she excelled academically and athletically (she always wore jersey #22). In her youth, she was an accomplished equestrian, taking home numerous blue ribbons.

She later attended Maine College of Art where she polished her skills as a jewelry maker and painter. Freedom also received certifications in Philadelphia and Tucson. She often enjoyed going to area schools and sharing her craft with the children of Rockland.

She had a keen ability to craft jewelry that matched the person she was making it for, which brought great joy to many. Freedom and her mother owned a jewelry shop in downtown Rockland, where she loved taking her mother’s designs and bringing them to life.

She will be eternally missed by her best friend and mother, Heidi Stevens, and her stepfather, David Hooper, of Rockland; dearest father David Hamlin and her stepmother, Cindi, of South Thomaston; children, who were her whole world, Alexandra Bunker, Xavier Luce and Lux Luce; siblings Cassie Burrows, Zeke Hamlin and Taylor Hamlin; grandparents Ruth Stevens and Roy Peasley and Ruel and Linda Hooper; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and her very dear friends Matt Bates, Johanna Stadler, Dana Smith and Mike Gray.

Margie and Lawrence Hamlin, Peter Stevens, and her grandparents predeceased her.

Freedom and her mom were avid Rolling Stones fans. Her mom often reminded her she only saw them in concert three times while Freedom saw them four. It was often a playful conversation between them. She also loved going on motorcycle trips with her mom.

Freedom’s children completed her. She loved them deeply and profoundly. She loved painting with her children and they loved painting with her. She loved taking them to the beach and playgrounds, studying with them and attending school activities, and just snuggling on the couch on a rainy day. Her mother and stepfather will continue to raise Xavier and Lux, surrounded by Freedom’s spirit and love, with the help of her father, David and Cindi Hamlin.

One of Freedom’s favorite places to be was the private beach of Chickawaukie Lake, where she shared simple and extraordinary times with her mother and children. Today, when you are on that beach, you can feel Freedom’s presence all around you, in the teal-colored dragonflies (the favorite color of both Freedom and her mom), the loons and family of ducks that swim close by.

Freedom will live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved her even though her loss was tragic.

A celebration for family and friends will be held at the public Chickawaukie Lake beach Sunday, July 26, at 1 p.m. Pastor Ray Thombs will officiate. Masks and social distancing will be observed. Bring chairs and/or towels to sit on.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hope for Women, P.O. Box A, Rockland, ME 04841 in memory of Freedom.
