The coronavirus pandemic ended up scuttling the NAACP’s plans to hold its large annual convention in Boston this summer — but the civil rights organization is planning some social-distanced events starting Friday.
“Freedom Weekend” kicks off on Friday with a drive-in soul music concert at 6 p.m. The concert at UMass-Boston is free, and people must register their car and remain in the vehicle during the show. The event, with assistance from the city, the state and UMass, also will be live-streamed.
Saturday starting at 1 p.m. is the “NAACP Boston Branch Day of Action & Service” including in-person volunteer opportunities in Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain and Hyde Park, plus some virtual volunteer opportunities, like census and voter-registration phone banking.
People interested in any of these events can go to naacpboston.org to sign up. The national convention will take place virtually from Aug. 2 to 15.
